We are upgrading our sonar from a very old Eagle brand but I'm having trouble selecting a new one and would like to get pro's and con's of the 2 that I'm comparing. Right now I'm looking at the Lowrance Elite 7 HDI with the chartplotter, broadband and DI vs the Humminbird 858c HD Di. Money is also a issue and the Lowrance is $599 vs $839 for the Humminbird and another issue is customer service. I know a lot of people are brand loyal, but for me brand isn't that big of a issue so if someone can help with the pro's and con's of both units it would really help me out a lot. Thanks

I think it's really a matter of which one you prefer. I ran Lowrance for years and switched to Humminbird at the beginning of 2012. I won't ever go back! Lowrance seems to have a little better picture but that is where the advantages end... Humminbird is much more user friendly. Fewer buttons to push and less time reading an owner's manual because the units are self-explanatory. Humminbird has better customer service. I upgraded to side imaging on the console about 6 months ago and all it took was a phone call to a friendly customer service rep to find out that everything was compatible. Lowrance is going to all this touch screen crap now right after replacing Gen1 with Gen2... I compare Lowrance/Humminbird to Windows/Mac. One is obsolete as fast as you get it installed and the other isn't. Humminbird invents the technology and then Lowrance steals it from them. As far as the individual units go, you will have to do your own research on those and determine which one will do what you need it to do but there is my opinion of the two companies overall.
