Had a guy come down from Lexington, TN to prepare for the upcoming FOM Regional on Neely.
We hit the water Saturday during the cold front to find muddy water conditions as well as a wind that got worse throughout the day. Most of Saturday was spent riding and showing him the lake as well as trying to find ways that he could incorporate his deepwater style to Neely. We caught a few fish and found some deepwater structure that he plans to check out a little more during his practice just before the event.
Sunday was a good bit cooler and we blasted off with jackets and sweats on that morning. Made our first stop on some ledge fish that we had located the evening before and caught a few smaller fish before he decided he wanted to see some shallower stuff. We still fought muddy conditions but going shallow immediately paid off and we started putting some fish in the boat. We spent a couple of hours targeting shallow fish and then went to check out a location that he was told about by another local. Once we got there, we found some great water and located tons of bait as well as a few quality fish but couldn't do much with it under the conditions we faced.
He left happy and was excited that he had some good starting points when he returns in October to fish the event. I am confident that a couple of the spots we looked at will hold enough quality fish to give him a good finish and we played with several patterns that I expect to be productive when he returns so all in all it was a good weekend where he got a lot accomplished and a good headstart on the competition when he returns.
Water temps are still in the low 80's but we found some water in the 70's farther back in a couple of the creeks and there is tons of bait pushing back into the creeks with the fish not far behind. The majority of the fish we found were still in the first 1/3 of most of the major feeder creeks and holding around the mouths of main river pockets.
